TOWARDS A BETTER WAY OF WORKING LIFE // JANUARY 2020

28.12.20

2020 may feel like so much time blur, but that doesn't mean nothing happened. This year, we learned to live locally and longed to get out of the house. We discovered how much we needed people and found new ways to be together. We step into 2021 with newfound appreciation of our neighbourhoods and each other.

NEIGHBOURHOOD

Design and strategy consultancy, Nemesis, flags koinonia as an emerging trend for 2021 and beyond; a group philosophy rooted in shared connections and purpose, where identity is based on values, institutions and your role in a network. We're here for it.

It's time to answer that age-old question "where can I get a really good Christmas sandwich?" with a takeaway from some of the finest 'stuff between two pieces of bread' makers in London.

"We didn't know how much we relied on our highstreet - until we didn't have one." It's easy to join Save The Street's campaign to support local shops and the people who run them by signing their open letter to the government.

HOW 2 // STAY FOCUSED

Listen to poets Fred Moten & Harmony Holiday reflect on records and readings that help us find quietness when we need it and abandon it when we need to be loud in the first of three Frieze Listening Sessions

HOW 2 // STRUCTURE YOUR DAY

Book a visit from mobile refill shop the TopUp Truck. Better yet, tell your neighbours so the whole street can pick up some zero waste groceries. Now taking bookings in E5, E8, N16 and E9.

HOW 2 // GET AWAY FROM WORK

Sign up for an online Spring Term course in drawing, printing or sculpture at the Royal Drawing School. All course rates are subsidised and they also offer a comprehensive concessions scheme.

Enjoy new releases and festival flicks on Rio Player, proceeds from which go directly to support the cinema and their partners.

HOW 2 // SUPPORT YOUR NEIGHBOURS

In March 2020, community cookery school Made In Hackney paused its classes to launch a temporary direct-to-door, free meal delivery service for households struggling to access food. They've provided over 50,000 meals since then. They are looking for contributions to help them continue service until March 2021 - be that through donations or social media shares.

The E5 Baby Bank is a community-led project that supplies local families with essentials like clothes, nappies, wipes, and baby baths. In the five months they've been running, they've helped nearly 400 families. They are looking for seasonal donations - clean, in good condition and sorted and labelled by age and sex of child. You can keep up with their weekly wish list through Instagram and Facebook.
